We have compiled the technical terms frequently used in the crane and wire rope industry, along with their Turkish and English equivalents, in a single guide. It is a quick reference resource for field workers, procurement specialists, and engineers.

A

Wear (Aşınma): The thinning of rope wires as a result of friction.
Suspension Ratio (Askı Oranı): The rope reeving ratio between the car and the motor in an elevator/crane system (1:1, 2:1, etc.).

B

Boom (Bum): The extendable arm of the crane that lifts the load.
Breaking Load (Kopma Yükü): The maximum load a rope can carry without breaking.

Ç

Core (Çekirdek): The structure at the center of a rope that supports the strands (IWRC or FC).
Steel-Core Rope (IWRC): A rope whose core is made of steel.

D

D/d Ratio: The ratio of sheave diameter to rope diameter; it directly affects rope life.
Rotation-Resistant Rope: Specially constructed ropes with a low tendency to rotate under load.

F

Fiber-Core Rope (FC): A rope with a fiber core, more flexible but with lower capacity.
Swivel (Fırdöndü): A connecting element that allows the rope to rotate on its own axis.

G

Galvanized Coating: Protecting steel wire against corrosion by coating it with zinc.
Safety Factor (Güvenlik Faktörü): The ratio of breaking load to safe working load.

H

Hoist: The lifting unit (hoist).
Rope Hook (Halat Kancası): The end fitting that connects the load to the rope.

K

Hook (Kanca): The hooked part that holds the load.
Breaking Load (MBL): See Breaking Load.
Tower Crane (Kule Vinci): A type of crane with a fixed installation, used in high-rise construction.

M

Lifting Eye (Mapa): A threaded device that creates a lifting connection point.
MBL (Minimum Breaking Load): The minimum breaking load.
Mobile Crane: A type of crane that can move on its own axle.

P

Stainless Steel Wire Rope: A rope type that shows high resistance to corrosion.
Periodic Inspection: The legally mandatory regular inspection of ropes and equipment.

S

Sling (Sapan): The rope/chain/strap that connects the load to the lifting point.
Socketing: The processing of a rope end for a permanent connection (resin, wedge, clip).
SWL (Safe Working Load): The safe working load.

T

Drum (Tambur): The cylindrical part around which the rope is wound.
Strand (Tel Demeti): A group formed by a number of wires bundled together.
Thimble (Göz Demiri): The metal insert that protects a rope eye.

V

Vinç (Crane): A machine for lifting and moving loads.

W

WLL (Working Load Limit): The working load limit.
Wire Rope Clip (Bulldog Klemens): A U-bolt clip used to connect a rope end.

Y

Load Hook: See Hook.
Fatigue (Yorulma): Weakening of a material as a result of repeated loading.
